Osama bin Mohammed bin Awad bin Laden was the founder of the al-Qaeda organization, responsible for the September 11 attacks on the United States and numerous other mass-casualty attacks against civilian and military targets. He was a member of the wealthy Saudi bin Laden family.
US president Barack Obama said bin Laden, the most-wanted fugitive on the US list, had been killed on Sunday (May 1, 2011) in a US operation in the Pakistani city of Abbottabad.
